A journey along Colombia's coffee trail

“I absolutely love drinking coffee, because of the smell it begins with, and this coffee, in particular, it's very good,” said Elizabeth Brown, who enjoyed her coffee tour in Jardin, Columbia.

Nestled in between the Andean foothills of southwestern Antioquia, the Colombian coffee town Jardin has been described as one of the country's best-kept secrets. And the coffee mentioned by Brown is grown and produced right here.

Colombia is the third largest coffee producer in the world, and Jardin is a famous town for coffee planting, producing and transportation in the country. A coffee tour, therefore, should be on your must-do list when traveling to Colombia.

“At this moment the tourism in Colombia is the fastest growing industry. It is playing an important role in many regions of the country,” said José Castaño, a local tour guide of the coffee trail in Jardin.

Family-run farms offer visitors the chance to experience real coffee life in Jardin, allowing visitors to learn how to make a special cup of coffee. Now, one of the most prestigious coffee farms is opened up to tourists for the first time.

“We came to see how it is done, back home we drink so much coffee and we wanted to see how it's produced from the source,” said a visitor to Jardin.

The transportation on the coffee trail is called Chiva, which are buses made of wood, adapted to transport coffee, plantain, and yucca since 1920. Riding the Chiva among the misty mountain pathways with local people is one of the unique experiences during the coffee trail.

Besides, Jardin's town square offers an array of coffee bars catering to different tastes.

And if you are interested in more thrilling activities, Jardin boasts other attractions too. Sports such as water rafting and waterfall abseiling are choices for adventurers. The surrounding natural area of Jardin is regarded as one of the best places in Colombia for birdwatching because some of the endangered species of birds can be rather easily spotted in this rich biodiversity of the forest.

For many decades towns like Jardin were completely off limits for visitors because of notorious safety concerns in Colombia. But now, more places are opening up for safe-tourism and eco-tourism. And places like Jardin will boast more diversified attractions to attract tourists' attention.
