China and the United States marked 40 years of diplomatic relations in 2018.
At a daily news briefing on Thursday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted the achievement, adding it was now time for the two countries to work towards the healthy development of bilateral relations.
"Confucius, an ancient philosopher, and educator of China, once said, at the age of 40, one has no doubts about the world. 40 years of China-U.S. ties tell us one thing, that cooperation benefits both countries while confrontation can hurt both," spokesperson Hua Chunying said at the daily briefing.
Although there is some confusion and doubts about that in the U.S., the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump at the G20 produced a consensus to push forward bilateral ties based on coordination, cooperation, and stability, Hua noted.
"These serve as guidelines for solving problems and promoting the healthy development of bilateral relations."
We hope the U.S. can meet China half-way and steer relations towards the right track of mutual respect and win-win cooperation, the spokesperson added.
