Khami, a ruined city which developed after the capital of Great Zimbabwe had been abandoned in the mid-16th century, is testimony to a civilization that has disappeared. The site is of great archeological interest but has suffered environmental damage over the years such as water infiltration, erosion from exposure to windborne sand, and animal and plant infestation. For these reasons, Khami was on the 1996 and 2000 Watch lists. /Photo via whc.unesco.org
