Italy became the first G7 country to back the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). While Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte believed that the BRI agreement will “build a better relationship” between China and Italy, the country’s traditional allies regard the participation in the BRI as harmful to their broader interests. Differences of views, according to Michelle Geraci, undersecretary of state at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, are quite normal.
