Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that allows Russia to target Ukrainian firms and individuals with economic counter-sanctions, according to a statement released by the Kremlin on Monday.
The move was in response to "unfriendly actions of Ukraine" related to the introduction of sanctions against Russian nationals and legal entities, as well as to "protect national interests," according to the statement.
The decree states that the measures can be called off if Ukraine withdraws its sanctions against Russian citizens and companies.
Ukraine enforced sanctions on Russian tycoons, companies, and other entities after Moscow seized the Crimean Peninsula in March 2014 and backed armed forces in eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine carried a series of restrictions towards Russian Internet and media companies in 2017.
Putin has also instructed the government to draw up a target list.
