Malaysia's monarchy is unusual, with kings serving for a term of five years. Then a new monarch is chosen by the country's various royal families. The position is ceremonial and the monarch doesn't participate in the country's daily governance. However, he is involved in major appointments, such as the prime minister and he serves as the commander-in-chief of the Malaysian armed forces. The king also has the power to grant pardons and swears that he will protect the religion of Islam.
