In August, the blue poppy gently sways on the frigid meadow of the Qiangtang Grassland. Thorns are found all over its leaves, stems, fruits and even on the back of the petals. This is a mechanism to prevent getting bitten by animals.

It has elegant and very large flowers, which attract various insects on the plateau for pollination and gathering nectar.
