Video game shows are all about trying new games. But at a Beijing event last week, you have to "play" the show itself in addition to the games.
The "Nuclear Fusion" organized by Chinese gaming fan site g-cores.com was designed as a game of collection. The attendees have to collect stamps from 16 booths to win awards.
The 5,000 players at the event ran, queue and fight with each other by playing new games showcased in the booths.
Among them were budget-heavy "triple-A" titles like "God of War 4", individual games developed by small groups like crypto mining simulator "Bitcoin Tycoon" and hard-core games like "The Sinner" in which the player's character die and retry roughly every two minutes.
The top award of the show is lucrative to any gamer: a 4k TV set, three gaming consoles and 12 free games.
But the job is harsh: One has to pass four "hell challenges" to get them all.
1. Beat the final boss of action game "Bayonetta 2" under the hardest level in just two minutes.
2. Drive a Japanese train in "Densha de Go!" and stop it almost exactly as scheduled. That means a two-second time window and a six-meter allowed range.
3. Beat a customized level in Super Mario Maker, which contains randomized enemies to prevent you from practicing time and time again.
4. Beat the hardest AI in Tetris DS. The AI can land Tetris pieces in an insanely fast speed.
Check the cover video to see how hard those challenges can be.
In addition to hard single-player levels, the show also arranged two-vs-two duals for players to challenge each other. Popular multiplayer games include Overcocked, Mario Kart 8, Human: Fall flat and Super Bomberman R.
Whether players can win the matches depends a lot on luck, giving players a fun experience instead of fierce competition.
According to an event staff, this design was meant to convey a message to attendees: Game is fun and you can have it with your friends.
