A professor of Moscow State Institute of International Relations said the partnership between China and Russia is developing fast and in a positive direction.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a 3-day visit to Russia. The two nations have agreed to bring the relationship to what's been called a "comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era." Meanwhile, the Chinese leader is set to deliver a speech before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Following his presence here is a huge Chinese delegation of government and business leaders.
President Xi and President Putin agreed to promote their countries' partnership to what they are calling a comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era. A lot of possibilities are on the horizon. CGTN Senior Correspondent Tian Wei spoke with Alexander Lukin, Professor of Moscow State Institute of International Relations, discussing the latest interactions between the two leaders.
"The partnership is developing very fast and also in a very positive direction. We have several documents that were signed by two leaders," said Lukin. He believes the relationship is developing in a strategic field, and China also fully supports Russia's nuclear policy with the U.S.

Joint statements say the two sides are looking to give each other more support as they take their own development paths, preserve respective core interests, and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity. Also covered are aligning development strategies and working together on economic issues, trade and investment. Beijing and Moscow also agree to place a high priority on areas such as security and coordination on international issues.
One of the things that both sides have been working on is 5G development. Huawei already signed documents of cooperation with Russia's telecom company MTS to develop the 5G technology next year, which is quite an issue internationally recently with the U.S. trying to break up with Huawei.
Lukin said the U.S. is using the economic power for political purpose because the U.S. is trying to limit China's economic development and prevent China from becoming a leader in technology. So it is necessary to create a more independent economic system from the U.S. For this point of view, Lukin thinks the 5G agreement between China and Russia is important. It not only shows that Russia supports China's 5G technological growth but also developing a new market for China.
At the same time, Lukin also highlighted that both countries need more diversification and cooperation with each other, so that if any single country or ally decides to stop because of political reasons, the country does not suffer too much.
