Formed by narrow streets and ancient yards, Beijing's symbolic hutong area epitomizes local traditions and ways of living. In February, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a surprise visit to a hutong in Beijing to extend his Spring Festival greetings to the folks, and shared his thoughts on preserving the city's history.
In Xi's own words
Where does Beijing's culture lie?
It lies in the hutongs.
Although hutongs are old fashioned,
they also have to cater to the needs of the residents' modern lifestyle.
