The next step in making breakthroughs in science and technology lies in abandoning illusions and relying on ourselves, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday during his visit to a major tech hub in central China's Wuhan.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, went to two tech companies – one making integrated circuits and the other focusing on fiber technologies Thursday morning, to see the independent innovation and industrial upgrading there.
While stressing the importance of “overcoming difficulties on our own,” Xi said that everyone on key positions should bear the sense of responsibility to answer the call, and speed up in mastering core technology.

He also pointed out that talents team should be built up because talents are of crucial importance in development, adding Wuhan is full of potential as it holds many universities and colleges.
The two companies Xi visited are located in China's “Optical Valley” – the Donghu New Technology Development Zone, where China is building a memory chip development center worth 24 billion US dollars.
Chips, or large-scale integrated circuits play a critical role in almost all modern gadgets.
