German Chancellor Angela Merkel will miss the opening of the G20 summit in Argentina after her plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Cologne due to a technical problem, her spokesperson said.
"We will not be proceeding today," the spokesperson told AFP.
Merkel's plane, the Airbus A340 "Konrad Adenauer," took off in Berlin and was originally destined to Buenos Aires where the summit is set to open on Friday.
Due to a malfunction of the electrical system, the plane circled over the Netherlands and had to return to Cologne/Bonn Airport in western Germany.
Local media Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger reported that fire brigades were dispatched to the airport in the event of a hard landing.
Merkel, traveling together with Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and a group of journalists, plans to take another plane to continue their trip.
