Hurricane Michael death toll rises to 26, dozens still missing

Hurricane Michael death toll rose to 26, said police in the US state of Florida on Tuesday. 

Dozens are still missing in Mexico Beach area where Hurricane Michael made its landfall.

The number of fatalities was expected to rise further as rescuers are combing through decimated buildings, said local authorities. 

Michael's official landfall happened at north of Mexico Beach, a small coastal town with a population of 1,000 on October 10, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Michael, as US strongest storm, struck Florida with winds of 155 miles per hour (250 km/h). The storm fell just three kph short of a top-level Category 5.

Nearly 16,000 single family homes have been damaged, and more than 4,000 have been destroyed. 

Tyndall Air Force Base, which was also in the path of the hurricane, saw its hangers shredded and jets flipped. F-22s that were stationed there also sustained heavy damage.

Analysts have put the total loss inflicted by Hurricane Michael to be between 15 and 21 billion US dollars.
