Amtrak’s historic Great Dome Car is back in service this fall. The vintage glass-domed train car with windows on all sides and overhead provides passengers with panoramic views all along the route from New England to Canada.
Originally built in 1955, the Great Dome Car first ran the route from Chicago to Seattle. It was renovated in 1985, and was part of the daily service on the Amtrak Auto Train to and from the Washington, DC and Orlando, Florida through 1994. Brought back by Amtrak this fall, it is now the only dome car still in service.
This year, the Great Dome Car will be running the Adirondack and Downeaster lines from September 27 through November 2. There will be four trips per day from Brunswick via Portland to Boston and from Montreal via Albany to New York. Passengers can immerse themselves in the views of scenic villages, coastline, river vistas and Lake Champlain located alongside the journey.
The vintage car, with seats following a first-come, first-serve basis, provides an upper level of seats for the extra sightseeing experience. The trip lasts about 10 hours and the ticket price for the entire trip is as low as 53 US dollars.
