Chasing heroes: Retired soldier embarks on self-driving journey to Xinjiang

1 / 6   He Runhua, a 75-year-old retired soldier from north China's Tianjin Municipality, decided to embark on a self-driving journey along the Duku Highway, one of the most iconic highways located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to reach to the memorial museum of those devoted soldiers who sacrificed their lives to build the legendary highway. /VCG Photo

3 / 6   Dubbed one of the most beautiful highways in China, Duku Highway was built along the winding and rugged mountain roads, as well as crossing over ten major rivers near the Tian Shan (Mountains of Heaven). It took more than 10 decades for tens of thousands of soldiers to build the highway, among which 168 of them sacrificed their lives during the construction process. /VCG Photo

4 / 6   To commemorate those who devoted their lives to the construction of the highway, a memorial museum was built up at the end of the road, and that's also the destination of He Runhua's journey. Chen stayed at the museum since the highway was built and worked as a guide here to deliver the legendary stories to those who visited the museum.
