A female baby golden snub-nosed monkey made her public debut at the Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park in south China's Guangdong Province on April 12.
The baby golden snub-nosed monkey was born at the Park on March 2 and was named Xiao Chun, meaning "little spring" in Chinese, as she was born in early spring. At one-month-old, Xiao Chun only weighs 800 grams.
Golden snub-nosed monkey mothers usually take care of their babies within three months after their births. Keepers found that other monkey siblings are very curious about Xiao Chun and they try to imitate their parents to take care of an infant.
Huang Tongwen, a keeper at the safari park, said that it is the process of young monkeys to learn to raise babies, and Xiao Chun could learn the surviving skills like climbing and jumping with her siblings. This would reduce the burden and increase the milk of her mother, and is good for improving the survival rate of new-born golden snub-nosed monkeys.
The golden snub-nosed monkey is under first-class state protection in China. It is also one of the three national treasures of China along with the giant panda and takin. Only five species of golden monkeys now exist in the world, all of them are listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
