Wuxi, in east China's Jiangsu Province, has been chosen to host the 2021 World Taekwondo Championships and the World Para Taekwondo Championships.

The decision was reached at a World Taekwondo Council meeting in the United Arab Emirates.

Wuxi was represented at the meeting by Vice Mayor Liu Xiao, who stressed the city will do its best to prepare for hosting the events, while pledging heavy investment into the sport.

This will be the second time China has hosted the Taekwondo World Championships after Beijing did so in 2007.

Since 2017, Wuxi has established a stable and long-term cooperative relationship with the World Taekwondo Federation, with the martial art becoming a calling card of the city.

The World Taekwondo Grand Slam Championship Series and the Taekwondo World Cup have been held successively in Wuxi, while the World Taekwondo Wuxi Center has also been established.

Vice-mayor Liu Xiao also noted the 2021 World Championship will be another successful event to promote the future development of taekwondo.

Wuxi has formulated a comprehensive preparatory plan for the coming event, including plans to build a world-leading fighting venue.

The 2021 Taekwondo World Championships are scheduled to be held in May, when more than 2,000 athletes from nearly 200 countries and regions will come to Wuxi to compete.
