World No. 1 Rafa Nadal has broken yet another record as he surpassed John McEnroe’s 34-year-old mark for successive set wins on a single surface. Nadal eclipsed McEnroe’s record as he stormed into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open after beating Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-4 on clay in Spain’s capital on Thursday.
The win has helped the King of Clay to extend his winning streak on his pet surface to 50 sets in a row. McEnroe had accomplished his 49-set winning record-setting run on the carpet in 1984 and in that process he had clinched the Madrid Indoor Open title.

“When my career is over, these are things that are going to be there forever,” Nadal said. “They are big records. It's difficult to be able to win 50 sets in a row. But I've done it. It's over.
Let's not talk about that anymore and let's focus on what we have ahead,” the Spaniard, who is eying a sixth Madrid Open title and will play Austria's Dominic Thiem on Friday for a place in the last four, remarked.
Interestingly, 31-year-old Nadal's 50 sets invincible run have included tournament wins in Barcelona, Monte Carlo and last year's French Open.
