Pascal Martinot-Lagarde won gold in the men’s 110m hurdle by the thinnest of margins at the European Championships Friday night in Berlin.
In a finish that provided tons of thrills, the former European indoor champion edged Sergey Shubenkov of Russia by 0.002 of a second — a victory that wouldn’t have been possible without the application of the video assistant referee (VAR).
Four years after winning the bronze medal at the 2014 European Championship in Zurich, Martinot-Lagarde improved his result by 13.17 seconds to win the third gold of his career.
Meanwhile, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, at an age of 17, ran away with the gold medal in the men’s 1,500-meter race, becoming the youngest European champion in tournament history.

Matthew Hudson-Smith clinched gold after clocking 44.78 seconds in the men's 400m final. Belgium's Kevin Borlee came second in 45.13 seconds , followed by his brother Jonathan Borlee with 45.19 seconds.
"It's a good feeling, it's a good feeling. I was talking to my agent and my coach. Time doesn't matter. That's for the future. This is about winning. That was the whole of this year, win Europeans. I did it," Hudson-Smith said.
The first edition of the European Championships is a multi-sport event featuring aquatics events, rowing, gymnastics, cycling, triathlon and golf in Glasgow and athletics in Berlin.
