Singaporeans have mixed feelings about their country’s role as a host to the historic meeting between US President Donald Trump and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un.
Police vacations were frozen, hotel rooms were put on hold and organizers were in full gear when Trump announced that the two were scheduled to meet on June 12 in Singapore.
Then the US president cancled it. Singapore was forced to tell police that they can take vacation and hotels released rooms.
Now it’s all back on hold again, at least for now. The host city stands to see a large influx of people for the meeting.
For some of the citizens, it's good for tourism as Singapore was chosen due to its neutrality, security advantages and a track record of hosting international summits. It’s good to highlight Singapore as a safe and neutral country.
For others, however, the meeting could cause major inconveniences with many road closures, and the additional security presence.
Whether the benefits outweigh the cost remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure that everyone is at the edge of their seats waiting for the green-lighting of the summit in the coming days.
If that does happen, it could very well be seen as a historic moment.
