The Speaker of the House of Representatives said the U.S. is reaffirming its commitment to NATO and its respect for the European Union, following a visit to Belgium and Germany with a Congressional delegation.
Nancy Pelosi met Monday with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and other officials.
At a news conference, the speaker thanked the EU and said friendships between the two camps are "much more important than ever".
"All the more reason for us to have reinforced relationship with our NATO allies and to support the mobility and infrastructure that the EU is injecting into that security. Now more than ever, we need NATO as we go forward because the challenges are more complicated than a bipolar relationship with the Soviet Union. It's now much more diverse and therefore the friendships that we have much more important."
The speaker, often at loggerheads with U.S. President Donald Trump, said there was "no difference" between a Republican and Democrat vision for NATO, and stressed the need for future unity with the western alliance and “deepening commitment” to a military coalition, Euronews added.
