China hopes the summit between US President Donald Trump and leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un could happen as planned and be successful, China's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
The summit was scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. Trump on Thursday canceled it, but tweeted two days later that the summit was "likely" to happen as scheduled, after the second summit between Republic of Korea's (ROK) President Moon Jae-in and Kim at Panmunjom on Saturday afternoon.

Lu pointed out China welcomes and supports two Koreas to implement the consensus reached at the two summits, followed the spirits of dialogue, reconciliation and cooperation embodied from Panmunjom Declaration and continuously promote mutual trust through dialogues and consultation so as to play a positive role in continuing and consolidating peninsula's cool-down trend.
"We have always believed that direct contacts and dialogue between the leaders of the DPRK and the United States are crucial to resolving the peninsula nuclear issue," Lu said.
Lu added under the current situation, China hopes both the DPRK and the US could cherish the dialogue opportunities on the Korean Peninsula, maintain patience, release goodwill and work together in the same direction.
Lu also emphasized as a close neighbor, China has always adhered to the target of denuclearization of the peninsula, upheld the peace and stability of the peninsula and persisted in solving Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation and will continuously play an active and constructive role on the issue.
