France's World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris has issued an apology after he was charged with drink-driving by British police on Friday.

"I wish to apologize wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my teammates, the manager and all of the supporters," the Tottenham keeper said in a statement.

"Drink-driving is completely unacceptable. I take full responsibility for my actions and it is not the example I wish to set."

The 31-year-old is likely to face further punishment from Tottenham, who will take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.

"The club takes matters such as this extremely seriously and it will be dealt with internally," read a brief Tottenham statement.

According to Sky Sports, Lloris arrived home at 11 a.m. on Friday morning and did not train with Tottenham in the afternoon. It is not clear whether he will play against United.
