Japanese police are investigating 11 Chinese workers who were arrested over their eligibility to stay in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, according to a statement released by China's consulate-general in Sapporo on Monday.
The consulate required local police to provide the detainees with humane treatment and conduct a fair and impartial investigation, it said in the statement.

According to Japanese police, four Chinese individuals brought a patient to Kikonai hospital, who later died. The four men later went missing. Police launched an investigation and detained 11 Chinese after the incident.
The 11 workers overstayed their visas and worked illegally, the police said.
Some of them were deceived by an intermediary, according to the Chinese consulate in Sapporo.
Local officials are also looking for other 40 workers who reportedly disappeared.
