Three students were killed in a chemistry laboratory explosion at the Beijing Jiaotong University in Haidian District on Wednesday morning, according to the local fire department.
Preliminary reports show that students were conducting an experiment on the purification of landfill leachate when the incident occurred.
Some 30 fire engines were sent to the scene which brought the fire under control at around 10:20 a.m.
The investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
