ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski said in his podcast the WojPod that the Houston Rockets will have to offer a five-year contract with maximum salaries this summer to keep the team's point guard, 33-year-old Chris Paul, according to ClutchPoints on Sunday.
"When the Rockets made that deal for Chris Paul, knowing they would re-sign him (once he hit free agency), they made a conscious decision that they were gonna have to live with (paying him) $46, $47 million a year salary when he’s not nearly the player anymore in his late 30s, but, we’re gonna make a run at it now, we wanna win a championship now," said Woj.

Paul could have opted out his last year of contract with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2017 and signed a new one starting with 34.7 million dollars for the first year. However, he chose to opt in for 24.3 million so the Rockets can afford his contract through trade while taking in PJ Tucker with a mid-level exception. In other words, Paul has helped Houston save over 10 million US dollars.
Paul will become a free agent this summer with 18.6 points, 7.9 assists per game in regular season and 21.1 points, 5.8 assists per game in the playoffs for the past 2017-18 Season. If you take a look at his performance during the series with the Utah Jazz, you will agree that Paul deserves a big contract.
Under current Collective Bargaining Agreement of NBA, Paul could sign a five-year contract worth about 205 million dollars with the Rockets. The salaries for each year will be respectively 35.3 million, 38.1 million, 40.9 million, 43.7 million and 46.6 million.

Houston's concern is that they will need to pay as much as 46.6 million dollars to Paul when he becomes 37 years old in the 2022-23 Season. If his condition and performance slip a lot, Paul will take a huge bite off the team's payroll.
If Paul chooses another team, he can get a four-year contract with the maximum salary, though teams with enough space on their payrolls like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers are not in desperate need for point guards. The Rockets will still have the best chance with him. ESPN's expert Bobby Marks recommended that the Rockets offer five years with maximum salaries but with only a part guaranteed for the last year.
