Canadian defendant to stand trial for drugs smuggling in China

A court in northeast China's Liaoning Province will try Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, a Canadian citizen, on drugs smuggling charges, according to Chinese media on Wednesday.
Runsky.com, a website under the Dalian Radio and Television Station reported that the Liaoning Provincial High People's Court announced on an online statement on December 26 that a hearing on the case is set on December 29.
The Global Times said it had confirmed via government departments that Schellenberg is a Canadian national.
The report by runsky.com also revealed that "the amount of drugs allegedly smuggled (by Schellenberg) will astonish you when it goes public."
The Global Times cited China's Criminal Law as saying people who smuggle, traffic in, transport or manufacture opium of not less than 1,000 grams, heroin or methylaniline of not less than 50 grams or other narcotic drugs of large quantities shall be sentenced to 15 years in prison, life imprisonment or death, together with confiscation of defendant's property.
It also said that in December 2009, China executed British citizen Akmal Shaikh for smuggling 4,030 grams of heroin.
