Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China welcomes the meeting between leaders of the US and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and hopes that such a historic moment can result in denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Wang’s statement was made on Tuesday in Beijing when meeting with Lim Jock Hoi, secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), who is now on a visit to China.

The foreign minister said that security concern is at the core of the DPRK nuclear crisis, and to properly address this concern will require leaders from both sides to resolve differences through dialogue – a goal, Wang said, that has been China’s top concern for years.
“The role China has played is to promote and help realize such a scenario. China has been working for the past two decades or so to achieve this. We believe there must be a political solution to maintain peaceful dialogue. It’s important to realize complete denuclearization and it’s also important to address the legitimate security concerns. I don’t think anyone will doubt China’s role over the years and China will continue to play its constructive and important role,” Wang said.
He said China further hopes relevant parties will play an active role in the process of maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang reiterated the China-proposed "dual-track approach" in solving the Korean Peninsula issue.
The approach calls for promoting parallel progress in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula while establishing a peace mechanism, ultimately reaching both goals together.
In the video below, Wang explains the "dual-track approach" on April 29, 2017, during a meeting with United Nations Security Council ministers.
