China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged the U.S. to correct its mistake and drop the extradition request of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of China's Huawei, on Tuesday.
Canada and the U.S. have threatened the Chinese citizen's safety and violated her legitimate rights, Hua said.
"The incident is an abuse of extradition treaties between the U.S. and Canada."
The spokeswoman also noted that Canada's detention at the beck and call of the U.S. side is, in essence, a flagrant practice of hegemony in science and technology.
Her comment came after Canadian media said that the United States will proceed with the formal extradition of Meng from Canada, where she is currently on bail.
Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1, 2018, at the request of U.S. authorities as part of an investigation into an alleged scheme to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran.
"We are aware of the report in question and are closely monitoring the situation," Huawei said in its latest announcement Tuesday.
"Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries and regions where we operate, including export control and sanction laws of the UN, U.S., and EU. We have every confidence that the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will reach a just conclusion," the company said in a statement released today.
