Wang Qiang nominated for 'Most Improved Player' in WTA awards

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) on Monday announced the nominees for this year's WTA Player Awards. China's Wang Qiang is among the players nominated for the Most Improved Player of the Year.

The awards include Player of the Year, Doubles Team of the Year, Most Improved Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year.

The final winners of all rewards will be determined through voting based on their accomplishments this year in tennis. The WTA will announce their names at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore on October 19.

International tennis media outlets can vote for one player in each award until Friday.

Candidates for Player of the Year are Simona Halep who won the French Open, Montreal and Shenzhen, Angelique Kerber who won Wimbledon and Sydney, Naomi Osaka who won US Open and Indian Wells, Caroline Wozniacki who won the Australian Open, Beijing and Eastbourne and Petra Kvitova who took home five WTA championships in 2018.

Four combinations will compete for Doubles Team of the Year: CoCo Vandeweghe/Ashleigh Barty, Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova and Kristina Mladenovic/Timea Babos have all won Grand Slam titles together. China's Wang Qiang will compete for Most Improved Player of the Year with Kiki Bertens, Julia Goerges, Daria Kasatkina, Elise Mertens, Wang Qiang, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Wang took gold medal in women's singles at the 2018 Asian Games and became the first Chinese player to enter the semi-finals of China Open since Li Na in 2012.

Newcomer of the Year will fall to Amanda Anisimova, Danielle Collins, Mihaela Buzarnescu, Sofia Kenin or Aryna Sabalenka while Belinda Bencic, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Ajla Tomljanovic and Serena Williams are contending for Comeback Player of the Year.
