Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday that China has always believed that multilateralism is the only path that best suits the interests of the people of all countries.
President Xi made the remarks when meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) summit.
Faced with endless global challenges, there is no better choice for all countries than to strengthen multilateral cooperation, said Xi.
The proposals of building a community with shared future for mankind and the joint construction of the Belt and Road are what I came up with after repeated thinking of how all the countries should seek harmony and win-win cooperation in diversity, Xi noted.
No matter how the situation changes, China will adhere to multilateralism and support the UN to play a bigger role. I believe that most countries in the world also support multilateralism, said the Chinese president.
Guterres said that under the current situation, the international community must firmly commit itself to promoting multilateralism.
"The UN highly values China's adherence to multilateralism, support for international cooperation such as in dealing with climate change, and China has played a leading role in implementing the Paris Agreement," said the UN chief.
The UN expects China to play a greater role in promoting global trade, tackling climate change, and achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, he added.
