Tianjin Quanjian from Chinese Football Association Super League (CSL) has accepted an offer of 23.1 million US dollars for their Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel from Bundesliga’s Dortmund, reported German newspaper Bild on Sunday.
According to Bild, Witsel will sign a four-year contract with the German club with a yearly salary of around 11.5 million dollars. Dortmund is now in Switzerland preparing for the coming 2018-19 season of Bundesliga. Witsel will meet his teammates on Monday.
The transfer drama of the Belgian soccer player between Quanjian and Dortmund has been on and off for weeks. Witsel’s outstanding performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup has put him on the radar of teams that are seeking improvements. According to Belgian media’s reports in late July, Witsel took a medical test of Dortmund, and the two teams were close to reaching a deal after Dortmund agreed to use the release clause in Witsel’s contract.

However, Quanjian said that the release clause ceased to be effective since the transfer window already closed in China, and thus Witsel could not leave. Details of the following negotiations remain unknown, but it seems Witsel will finally make his debut at Europe’s five top major soccer leagues.
Quanjian is having a hard time as the team ranked only No.7 in CSL with six wins, four draws and six losses. Meanwhile, as the only Chinese team remaining in AFC Champions League, Quanjian has lost multiple key players and find themselves under heavy pressure.
