Russian President Vladimir Putin laid flowers at a monument commemorating warriors who died during the Nazi-led siege of St Petersburg. The siege of the city, then called Leningrad, lasted nearly two and a half years until a Soviet Army counteroffensive pushed the Nazis away on January 27, 1944. More than one million residents of Leningrad died during the occupation. Most residents had to survive on rations of just 125 grams of bread a day.
