‍Desert and drought are the two problems that are especially severe in China, as one third of its territory are deserts. Extreme weather brought by the vast sand lands in northern China was so severe that in the past years sand storms from the north would reach as far as Shanghai. Now, some companies are taking up the responsibility of trying to control and prevent the desert.
Elion was established in 1988 in the Kubuqi Desert of Inner Mongolia and has been successful in taming the desert's expansion. The company's chairman, Wang Wenbiao, was awarded "Global Dryland Champion" by the United Nations last year at an event for World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

M-Grass is another company that specializes in desert control and prevention. Inner Mongolia has the largest de-graded grassland, which is in danger of desertification due to exhaustive exploitation from local herders. M-Grass successfully domesticated a diversity of local grasses to make them more adaptable to the harsh weather.

Elion and M-Grass are successful examples of Chinese companies in desert control and prevention. As the Chinese government is encouraging a cooperation model of Private-Public-Partnership (PPP) in its desert control effort, both companies are trying to expand their businesses under financing from PPP. They also carry out cooperation with their overseas counterparts in Mongolia and Dubai to deepen the study on desert control.
