Hong Kong chief exec says it is important to put Hong Kong in the context

World Insight with Tian Wei

The 2019 World Economic Forum (WEF) has wrapped up in Davos. A range of issues have been discussed during the four days' events, from the current global challenges, the future of Europe, and climate change to the need of setting rules for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) race.

CGTN senior correspondent, Tian Wei spoke with Carrie Lam, the chief executive of Hong Kong SAR, in WEF on how to seek opportunities and find the best way to pursue development for Hong Kong in this day and age.

Experts at the World Economic Forum in Davos say human talent and workers will always be needed. But with the development of new technologies, more than 40 percent of today's core professional skills are expected to change in the next five years.

Lam also recognized the importance of innovation, saying, "You could not really resist the technological revolution. So the only option is to embrace it as early as possible, and apply it wisely to grow economy and improve livelihood."

"But the anticipation of job losses as the result of this technological revolution means that all governments need to gear up on education on training and retraining, to ensure that the labor force could still survive in the new technological age," she added.

Speaking of how we are going to look at the relationship between the past and future of Hong Kong in dealing with challenges, Lam said the past could certainly be an inspiration for the future, particularly when Hong Kong is seeking its new development path.

"I was giving a speech about Hong Kong's role in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and then I adopted an analogy. I said one way to look at the contribution of Hong Kong in BRI, is to look back at what Hong Kong has contributed to the country's reform and opening-up in the last four decades.

And this was very nicely and genuinely summed up by President Xi Jinping, when he met with the delegation in Beijing last November. The all six aspects in which President Xi commended Hong Kong for contributing to the country's reform and opening-up, could be equally applied to Hong Kong's participation in the BRI. So I think it is important to put things in context."
