Japanese national broadcaster NHK on Sunday released a controversial documentary about the atrocities committed by Japan's notorious Unit 731 during World War II. While many other Japanese documentaries have presented the country as a victim, NHK interviewed many old Japanese soldiers to tell the story from a different perspective.
This is the first time that Japan has publicly detailed the actions of the Japanese army's Unit 731. The documentary discussed the unit's development of biochemical weapons and the research it conducted on people during the Sino-Japanese War and World War II.
After the documentary aired, several members of its production team fell victim to online attacks by Japanese right-wing nationalists.
