Two months after the death of crosstalk master Chang Baohua, his nephew and also a famous crosstalk performer, Chang Guitian passed away on Friday at the age of 76.
Crosstalk is a traditional Chinese comedic art. It is one of the most popular cultural elements and is typically performed by two performers.
Chang Guitian was born in a crosstalk family. His grandfather Chang Lian'an was a master of the art in the first half of the 20th century and the founder of the Chang style crosstalk. His father Chang Baofang also became a famous performer in Beijing and Tianjin.
In 1954, Chang Guitian began to learn the art under Zhao Peiru. Chang Guitian used to be a performance partner of his uncle Chang Baohua, and his monologue works are also well-known among fans. He traveled all over the country and became a favorite comedian of the domestic audience.
The year 2018 has been unfortunate for crosstalk, and with the death of Chang Guitian, six crosstalk stars have left us in the past 11 months.
Many crosstalk fans lamented that they have lost too many crosstalk artists this year.
“This year has been disastrous. Rest in peace Mr. Chang,” said fans.
"I hope 2019 will be a happier year."
