Bitcoin is a form of electronic cash. People can collect bitcoins by mining them using electric equipment. The currency can also be bought or sold on special trade markets online.

The price of the world's first digital currency has widely fluctuated since its creation in 2008. Bitcoin wasn't worth much at first but its popularity took off, increasing its value. High fluctuations in its price began to dazzle the world.

2013 witnessed a sharp increase in Bitcoin's value, which peaked at over 1,000 U.S. dollars, up from just over 10 dollars. However, the currency's price then went through a period of stagnation from 2014 to 2017.

Its prices started at 998 dollars in 2017, reaching an all-time high of 19,666 dollars on December 17 the same year, before falling to 13,412 dollars on January 1, 2018.

The higher price, the more people rushed to mine or buy Bitcoin.

Bitcoin's price fluctuated between 13,000 dollars and 6,000 dollars throughout the first half of 2018. It kept hovering around 6,000 dollars by the middle of November. But its price fell by over 35 percent in one week and now is down nearly 80 percent from its peak last December.

The sharp decline shocked the world once again. The Bitcoin in circulation on December 17, 2017 had a total value of 327 billion U.S. dollars. Exactly a year later, that was down to 57.4 billion dollars, underlining how much the cryptocurrency bubble had burst.

Is cryptocurrency a good thing? Some experts say yes, others think the other way. It can make you rich in a minute, but maybe just for that minute.
