Fly over Africa: Republic of Malawi

CGTN

Formerly known as Nyasaland, the Republic of Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa with a population of 18 million. Apart from the legendary Malawian friendliness, the country has much to offer.

Located in Thyolo, a tea-growing district in southern Malawi, the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is the fourth public university for higher education. With the motto of “Where Excellence Reigns,” each year the university attracts a high number of applicants seeking higher education.

Moreover, a moving piece of architecture, World War I Memorial pays tribute to fallen Malawi soldiers. The memorial square also includes a statue to Malawi's first president, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda. Besides, to get closer to Malawi’s movers and shakers, Malawi’s parliament building is also a must-see place for visitors.

In recent years, the country has achieved economic growth and made great efforts to overcome decades of underdevelopment. After China and Malawi renewed diplomatic relations in 2007, the Chinese government has contributed financially to Malawi, and the bilateral trade between two countries has reached 289 million US dollars.

This is the fifth episode of our special feature on the African continent.
