China is preparing for the impact of a trade war

The trade war has damaged the global chain and world economy but China's domestic economy has seen a positive developmental momentum and has prepared a series of measures to offset the negative impacts of the US-China trade friction, Chinese officials said at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

The China-US trade war has disturbed the international division of labor, broken the order of global trade rules and lowered global productivity, Luo Wen, vice minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at the press conference, noting that the potential for retaliation from the US' major partners - a list that includes Canada, Mexico and the European Union (EU) - increases the risk of a global trade war.

But official data shows that China's trade has kept a stable and positive momentum of 20.9 percent year-on-year growth, according to Fu Ziying, China's international trade representative and vice minister of commerce.

It shows that China's reform in recent years has made its enterprises increasingly competitive and therefore better equipped to tackle trade friction and the Chinese government will release more measures to support Chinese enterprises so they can overcome the negative impacts of the trade war, Fu said.

China may further increase the export tax rebate rate and encourage enterprises to use export credit insurance while exploring emerging markets, Fu said, noting that all supportive measures will meet the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

With great market potential and industry support, China has confidence that most foreign enterprises will choose to invest in China and that the increasing amount of opening measures will attract more investors, Luo said, citing Tesla, which set up its first overseas factory in Shanghai in July, as an example.
