Strong quake hits Japan's northern island

A strong 5.3-magnitude quake jolted Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido at 8:58 a.m. (2358 GMT) on Friday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The quake was in the low five range in parts of Hokkaido prefecture according to the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which peaks at seven.

There is no danger of a tsunami from the quake.
