Substitute Iago Aspas scored in stoppage time to earn Spain a 2-2 draw with Morocco, giving them the top spot in Group B and a knockout game next against hosts Russia.
The North Africans, who had yet to score a point or even a goal, starting brightly and went ahead on 14 minutes, Khalid Boutaib took advantage of a horrible mix-up between Sergio Ramos and Andres Iniesta to race through and slide the ball calmly between David De Gea's legs.
The Spaniards pulled level five minutes later, when some crisp passing set Iniesta free inside Morocco's box. He cut it back with the outside of his right boot to Isco, who fired into the roof of Monir El-Kajoui's net from six yards.
However, when substitute Youssef En-Nesyri headed home the corner, the Moroccans seemed on course for their first victory in Russia.
But substitute Aspas scored an equalizer in injury time which was initially disallowed for offside, but awarded after intervention from the VAR. The 2-2 draw mean Spain stumble into the last 16 as group winners.
Both Spain and Portugal finished with five points, but La Roja top the group on goal difference. Iran and Morocco are both headed home.
