A total of 12 people were killed and 43 others were injured when an SUV driver mowed down pedestrians and then attacked people in Hengdong County, central China's Hunan Province, on Wednesday night, local officials confirmed.
The attack took place at around 7:35 p.m. BJT, when the male driver, 54-year-old Yang Zanyun, purposely rammed into pedestrians in a busy public square, and then attacked people with a shovel and dagger.
Police and people at the scene overpowered Yang. He was charged with the crime.
Among the 43 injured, 16 are in critical conditions. All of them have been hospitalized for further treatment and the local Red Cross Society has launched a voluntary blood donation to help the wounded.
According to the police investigation, Yang carried out the attack out of his desire to take revenge on society.
