A durian auction attracted bids from dozens of wealthy fruit lovers. The event included nine durians with each one fetching more than 300,000 baht (9,600 U.S. dollars). A kanyao durian, chosen for its perfect shape and ripeness, sold for 1.5 million baht (48,000 U.S. dollars) to a local businessman. It smashed the record of 800,000 baht recorded in 2018. Total proceeds of 144,000 U.S. dollars from the auction will be passed back to the farmers and donated to local charities for buying medical equipment for hospitals.
