Beijing's transport system during China's 'Golden Week'

CGTN

As tourists from all over the world travel to Beijing during China's National Day Holiday, the city's transport system comes under immense pressure. CGTN correspondent Nick Moore took a look at how visitors get around the city by subway, bus, and taxi during Golden Week.

In Guomao station, one of the busiest transfer stations in all of Beijing, there is quite a lot of space and plenty of seats on the train.

Even with so many people here for the National Day Holiday, Beijing's transport network remained really smooth.

As the city welcomes hoards of tourists, tens of thousands of Chinese also depart from the capital's airport to destinations overseas. Because Golden Week, along with Spring Festival, is one of the only two week-long holidays in China, many tourists plan their travels around National Day Holiday. Here are some statistics on just how many people traveled for Golden Week this year.

On October 1, the first day of the week-long holiday, there were 16,000 flights scheduled nationwide, transporting 1.83 million passengers. That's a 10-percent increase from this time last year. Some 16.25 million people traveled by train on October 1, an increase of 8.1 percent year-on-year.

Overall, during the National Day, 122 million journeys were made nationwide, 7.54 percent more than last National Day. Around 103 billion yuan was spent on domestic travel on the first day of the Golden Week, an increase of 7.19 percent year-on-year.
