Responding to the rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran, the Chinese foreign ministry has urged the relevant parties to work towards maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East.
"China asserts that international affairs should be handled in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations," the ministry's spokesperson Lu Kang said on Tuesday at a regular briefing during which he stressed that China firmly opposes any forms of hegemony and power politics.
"We hope that relevant parties could do more to bring peace and stability in the Middle East, not to escalate tensions," Lu added.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he would name the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as terrorists in an unprecedented step that drew Iranian condemnation.
Reports said that the U.S. designation of the IRGC marks the first time Washington has formally labeled another country's military a terrorist group.
