Mike Maccagnan, general manager of the NFL's New York Jets, lost his job on Wednesday according to an announcement made by the team's Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson. New York's newly appointed head coach Adam Gase will take over as the interim GM.
"This morning, I informed Mike that he was being relieved of his duties as general manager of the team, effective immediately…I will start a search for our new general manager immediately. In the interim, coach Gase will be the acting general manager," said the announcement.

Though the Jets continued to miss the playoffs in the past four seasons since Maccagnan took over, he did some good work in the position. He signed running back Le'veon Bell and linebacker C.J. Mosley for the team. He selected defensive end Quinnen Williams with the No.3 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. No wonder Johnson called Maccagnan a GM "helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months."
However, Maccagnan's position in the team had been unstable for quite a while. During the Draft, Michael Lombardi of The Athletic reported that Maccagnan was “on the hot seat” and many expected him to lose his job after the Draft.
There had been many reports about Maccagnan and Gase having disagreements over the signings of certain free agents. In the case of Bell, the GM gave him a four-year, 52.5-million-U.S.-dollar deal with 25 million as guaranteed money. However, the head coach, even though he liked Bell, did not want to spend that much on a running back.

Now that Maccagnan's gone, the relations between Gase and Bell may become tricky. Bell on Friday posted on Twitter: "There's been a bunch of false reports and speculation about me in the past about things I've said and done, so I'm used to this. I don't jump to conclusions when I hear or see a story that may affect me."
"Even if reports are true, that won't stop me from doing what I came here to do...everyone has a job to do, and I'm gonna do mine whether peopIe 'like' me or not. I'm here to win football games."
