Aamir Khan: The Bollywood icon who is close to China

CGTN's Dialogue

Following the success of "Dangal" and "Secret Superstar", Indian film star and producer Aamir Khan came to China once again with his latest work. "Thugs of Hindostan", the most expensive production in Bollywood history.

While sitting with CGTN's Dialogue, the Bollywood star shared his thoughts of his ties to China.

A fan of late Chinese author Jin Yong

When Jin Yong, China's most celebrated martial arts novelist, whose work inspired several generations of Chinese teenagers, passed away, Mr. Khan expressed his mourning on social media.

He also confirmed he is a fan of "The Deer and the Cauldron".

“I would love to have met him.”

"The Deer and the Cauldron" is about a boy, Wei Xiaobao, who was born at the bottom of society but becomes the center of a political storm miraculously in the 18th century.

Khan believes there are certain qualities shared between Wei XIaobao and the character he plays in his new film which is about the adventures of a mercenary – also in the 18th century – facing off against the British East India Company during the time they took over India by defeating one king after another.

“The most remarkable quality about (Wei Xiaobao) is that his is survivor. He survives under any situation. No matter how difficult a situation is, he finds a way out. He lies, he tricks, he is a survivor,” Khan said.

Unexpected popularity in China

Ten Indian films made it into Chinese cinemas this year, which is more than 2011 to 2017 combined. Bollywood productions are enjoying an even bigger share than ever before in this one of the world's largest movie markets.

However, Aamir Khan didn't become famous in China in the way many Hollywood stars do. One of his early works resonated with great number of Chinese movie lovers due to it being about life in Asia, very different to the foreign films that usually become popular at the box office.

“We were really happy to because of the market potential, but that our film we made had touched the heart of so many people in China.”

And he is keen to keep close ties with Chinese audiences.

Inspired by China's yin-yang philosophy

When talking about his film career, he pointed out he was inspired by the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang.

“There needs to be a balance for everything. When good becomes too good, it becomes evil,” he said. He also said he believes this ancient thought could be helpful in his filmmaking at certain points.
