Dortmund holds farewell match for goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller

Bundesliga's Borussia Dortmund held a farewell-match for Roman Weidenfeller, their goalkeeper who has played for the team for 16 years, at the Signal Iduna Park on Friday. The 38-year-old former captain said goodbye to his career with two penalty-kick savings and two goals.

Over 70,000 fans came to the stadium for the match between Borussia Dortmund All Stars and “Roman and Friends”. Weidenfeller played for both sides respectively in the first and second half of the match.

The legendary goalkeeper of Dortmund scored the only two goals in his professional career in the second half for All Stars, 20 years after his first professional game. Thanks to another two goals by Alexander Frei and Mohamed Zidan, All Stars finished the match with a 4-1 win.

Multiple German soccer players attended the match: Sebastian Kehl, Patrick Owomoyela, Felipe Santana, Dede, Jens Lehmann, Kevin Großkreutz, Christoph Metzelder, Per Mertesacker, Michael Ballack and of course, the club's former manager Jurgen Klopp.

After the game, Weidenfeller bid goodbye to BVB: "My gratitude goes to all working staff, players and fans of the team. Thank you so much," according to Tencent Sports.

Having joined Dortmund in 2002, Weidenfeller has made 453 appearances for the club and helped them win two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal champion and two DFL-Supercup titles. In 2014 in Brazil, he also won the FIFA World Cup champion with Germany.
