Sudanese security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades at anti-government protesters in Khartoum and other cities on Friday, amid a wave of demonstrations that so far resulted in the death of 19 people.
Protests began 10 days ago in the city of Atbara over rising food prices and fuel shortage and quickly spread to other cities. Residents say police have used tear gas and sometimes live ammunition against demonstrators.
19 people have been killed so far in the protests, the government said. The Sudanese Congress Party, one of the opposition parties which have been calling for protests, said security forces had detained its leader Omar al-Degair on Friday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for calm and restraint and called on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the deaths and violence, a UN spokesman said in a statement.
